Patriots defender opens up about offensive woes, losing streak: ‘It’s f-ing frustrating’

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 03:59:08 GMT

FOXBORO — After Sunday’s shutout loss to the Chargers, the Patriots became the first NFL team in 85 years to lose three straight games while allowing 10 or fewer points in each outing. The Pats have reached historic levels of offensive futility, despite a recent change at quarterback. Backup Bailey Zappe went 13-of-25 for 141 yards Sunday in place of Mac Jones, while the offense went scoreless. Naturally, frustration has simmered in the locker room.Patriots defensive tackle Davon Godchaux gave voice to that frustration in a long post-game interview with the Herald.“It’s frustrating. It’s frustrating. I’m not gonna sit up here and say, ‘You know, I still believe.’ It’s f—ing frustrating. Anybody can tell you that,” Godchaux said. “You know, I thought Zappe made some good throws today. I thought there was a couple balls we could’ve caught as receivers, and those guys would tell you the same thing, too. They can take acco...

Callahan: How much worse can the boring Patriots get?

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 03:59:08 GMT

FOXBORO — Rhamondre Stevenson gimped off the field with 4:25 left in the first quarter Sunday, anguished by a fresh ankle injury that caused him to fumble and could soon cause him to miss games.Lucky him.Stevenson missed the rest of another miserable loss, another D-minus offensive performance, another is-this-rock-bottom moment for the Patriots.Somehow, we’re still asking, and they’re still sinking.Bailey Zappe, of course, was no savior. He completed 13 passes over 11 scoreless drives in the 6-0 loss, his first start of the season. Not that Zappe had much help.Until late in the third quarter, Stevenson still led all Patriots in all-purpose yards. Meanwhile, Tyquan Thornton dropped a pinpoint deep ball, DeVante Parker stepped out of bounds on another bomb, Ezekiel Elliott fumbled and JuJu Smith-Schuster finished with one catch for the fourth time this season.Credit to them for fighting through a miserably cold rain Sunday. But all credit stops there. How do Bill Belichick...

The difference between a groove and a rut is all about the edges.Run a string down the center line of either, and you’ll find few impediments. On the margins, though, a groove is smooth. Precise. Designed to allow an object already in motion to stay in motion.A rut is rough around the edges. Bouncy. Always threatening to knock a traveler off-kilter.Or, in this case, knock the Broncos off a miracle playoff run just as it picked up steam.Denver’s postseason hopes aren’t dead after a frustrating, rutty 22-17 loss at Houston, but its path narrowed considerably Sunday when it came up 8 yards short of victory.“Disappointing loss,” head coach Sean Payton said. “Thought we were sloppy for most of the game.”The fine line distinguishing grooves from ruts has been Payton’s preferred metaphor all season. First he used it as a battle cry during Denver’s slow start. Then as a warning against complacency as his team got hot.Now it’s representative of the minuscule gap between succ...
