John Means flirts with another no-hitter to help Orioles beat Guardians, 2-1, ending 3-game skid: ‘Exactly what we needed’

John Means threw his signature changeup, then grimaced and dropped his head. He knew immediately that his pursuit of a second no-hitter, just like the ball off Andrés Giménez’s bat, was gone. The two-out home run in the seventh inning marked the first hit Means allowed in his third start back with the Orioles after last year’s Tommy John elbow reconstruction, and it provided the only run the Cleveland Guardians scored in Baltimore’s 2-1 victory.Means’ pitch count likely would have prevented him from finishing the feat, as he did May 5, 2021, against the Seattle Mariners for the Orioles’ first solo no-hitter since 1969. Saturday’s start marked Means’ longest since that game, as well as the club’s deepest no-hit bid since.“I’m going until [manager Brandon Hyde] tells me no,” Means said. “I was ready to go the whole time.”He followed Giménez’s home run, on his season-high 89th pitch, by in...District Attorney joins push to get homeless camp bans case to the Supreme Court

SAN DIEGO -- San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan has joined efforts to get the U.S. Supreme Court to weigh in on a federal court case out of Oregon that could reshape rules surrounding how cities can address homeless encampments. On Thursday, Stephan's office submitted a brief as an "amicus curiae," or "friend of the court," to support the case City of Grants Pass, Oregon v. Gloria Johnson, et al. that is angling to be heard by the highest court in the land. The lawsuit, which was brought by three unhoused residents in the small Oregon town of Grants Pass, sought to overturn city ordinances that restricted camping and sleeping in public through fines and other regulations.Last year, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals sided with the homeless plaintiffs, saying in its decision that it was a violation of the Eighth Amendment to punish people for sleeping in public when there is nowhere else for them to go. COSTA DA CAPARICA, Portugal (AP) — Sofia Oliveira was 12 years old when catastrophic wildfires in central Portugal killed more than 100 people in 2017. She “felt it was now or never to raise our voices” as her country appeared to be in the grip of deadly human-caused climate change. Now a university student, Sofia and five other Portuguese young adults and children between 11 and 24 years of age are due on Wednesday at the European Court of Human Rights, where they are accusing 32 European governments of violating their human rights for what they say is a failure to adequately address climate change. It’s the first climate change case filed with the court and could compel action to significantly slash emissions and build cleaner infrastructure.Victory for them in Strasbourg would be a powerful instance of young people taking a legal route to force their governments to adopt a radical recalibration of their climate measures. The court’s rulings are legally binding on member countries, ...Saturday Forecast: Partly cloudy & mild
