Is Super Bowl prize on the horizon for Shanahan, SF 49ers in Year 7?

Kyle Shanahan is entering his seventh season as the 49ers coach, making him their longest-tenured man in charge since the Super Bowl-winning days under Bill Walsh (1979-88) and George Seifert (1989-96).Is Shanahan snakebit, however, from following in those coaches’ footsteps and adding a sixth Lombardi Trophy to the 49ers’ cache? Each of the past two seasons has ended with frustrating NFC Championship Game defeats for the 49ers. Two seasons ago, they saw a 10-point fourth-quarter lead slip away to the Los Angeles Rams, who went on to beat the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl LVI. The Santa Clara City Council voted 6-1 earlier this week to approve a new housing development near the university. Councilmember Kevin Park was the sole no vote. The approval is key to breaking ground on the mixed-use housing complex planned at 2655 The Alameda, to revitalize a long-abandoned lot and create much-needed housing near the city's transit center. "The project will finally transform a blighted corner and an eyesore of 30-plus years into a beautiful mixed-use building for the community," Kapital Partners developer Anjuli Nanda Habbas said at the meeting. Completing this project will require an amendment to the city's general plan. Councilmember Anthony Becker said he isn't in favor of repeatedly amending the general plan for developments, but would in this case to move The Alameda project forward. The developer pla...

DUBLIN – The commander of Northern Ireland’s police force resigned Monday after infuriating rank-and-file officers over his bungled handling of two separate scandals.Against the odds, Chief Constable Simon Byrne had defied demands for his immediate resignation following last month’s accidental publication of the professional details of his entire 10,000-strong workforce. That unprecedented data breach revealed the closely guarded identities of key anti-terrorist personnel, exposing them to potential attack by Irish Republican Army die-hards.But he couldn’t survive the even stronger internal uproar over his defiant announcement last week that he intended to appeal a Belfast High Court judgment. It found he had unlawfully punished two junior officers as they tried to enforce coronavirus regulations at an Irish republican event in 2021. The court found he had bowed to political pressure from Sinn Féin, a finding that both he and the Irish republican party denied.“The last few day...
