MBTA tells drivers to brace for heavier traffic during second week of Sumner Tunnel shutdown The MBTA hosted a press conference Sunday to warn drivers of more slowdowns this week since the Sumner Tunnel two-month shutdown began last Wednesday. The shutdown started during a holiday week, so MassDOT officials said drivers should not be deceived. Officials also are urging drivers to plan ahead and use public transportation when possible.“People are going to be back from the holiday, that’s when you’re going to see most of your heaviest impacts,” said Jonathan Gulliver, MassDOT highway administrator. The nearly 90-year-old tunnel is undergoing a $160 million project to repair its ceiling, pavement and lighting. Drivers are being diverted while the construction project continues through August.“We’re hoping that people don’t look at the traffic impacts this week and think well it’s not so bad I’m gonna jump on the road next week it’s gonna be much much much worse. Volumes are way way down this week,” Gulliver said.To ease traffic, the MBTA is offering free or reduced alterna...

BoC expected to raise rates again this week, vying to quash inflation faster OTTAWA — The Bank of Canada is expected to raise interest rates again this week as forecasters say the economy has not softened enough for the central bank to back off. The interest rate announcement is scheduled for Wednesday, just over one month after the central bank hiked its key rate by a quarter of a percentage point, bringing it to 4.75 per cent. The June decision brought an end to the Bank of Canada’s pause on rate hikes after a string of hot economic data prompted concerns that rates were not high enough to bring inflation back to its two per cent target.Deloitte’s chief economist, Dawn Desjardins, said there have been some recent signs that the economy is taking a turn, with the latest job report for June showing the unemployment rate rising and wage growth slowing. But the overall picture suggests inflation is still sticky, wage growth is high and the economy continues to churn, she said. “I do think that we are seeing things shift. It’s influenced by many factors such as how well your house is insulated, the size and type of your air conditioner and outdoor temperature and humidity. According to our unpublished calculations, letting your home heat up...
